LO2 Task 3 Planning the Radio Show/Podcast

LO2 Task 3 Planning the Radio Show/Podcast

Anime Half-Hour
Synopsis;
In this half-hour long podcast, the presenters will discuss and debate different anime and cartoons they have watched during that week. The main anime it will be about will be One Piece as it is a long running anime going on ten years and an episode is released weekly. The program has already been planned to be produced for another ten years. This is good as there will be plenty of content to discuss.

A) Intended Radio Station/Broadcaster
The intended radio station and broadcasters for Anime Half-Hour are Sheffield Live! And the Broadcasters will be myself (Joseph Treacy) and my partner Stephen Pennington. We have decided to be the presenters ourselves as this works well with our synopsis and our idea for what our radio show is going to be presented like. As we have decided to make the radio show like a journey for the audience in which they can take with one of the presenters, (Joseph Treacy) as he is the newbie to the topic/genre anime which means he can take the journey with the audience from newbie to veteran, we thought this was a good idea as this means the audience will be inclined to carry on the journey by listening to the radio show and that it would keep them interested as they would feel like they are a part of something.

Our audio media product 'Anime Half-Hour' fits in with current UK trends as

B) Target Audience
The intended target audience for Anime Half-Hour would be stereo typically males between the ages of 12 – 25, however because the audio media product is for anyone who enjoys anime can target all ages and gender. The audience may be a niche market but it would introduce the local community to a new topic or even possibly a new hobby/form of entertainment.

The mode of address we intend to use is both suitable and appropriate for our targeted audience as the way in which we intend to address them is as if they're friends and they are there with us I.e. we intend to use personal pronouns. We also intend to address the audience by involving them in the show as we are going to involve them in the show by taking them on a journey with one of the presenters (Joseph Treacy) from newbie to expert as stated before in section A for why we picked ourselves to be the presenters. Another way we intend to interact with the audience is to eventually get active on social media such as Twitter and Facebook etc., as this would allow us to gain a larger audience and allow us to interact with the audience more therefore gaining a more interact and loyal audience

C) Content Plan
The audio media product will run on average for around 30 minutes (Half an hour).
      In this half our long podcast, the presenter(s), myself (Joseph Treacy) and Stephen Pennington will discuss and debate different anime and cartoons we have watched in the week, The podcast will be mainly based around the anime 'One Piece' as this would provide us with lots of content to 'discuss and debate' as it has been running since 1997. Another reason why we chose to base our audio media product 'Anime Half-Hour' around this product was because the show 'One Piece' is produced and uploaded weekly but the biggest would have to be the fact that it has been planned for another 10 years of production which is good as it gives us lots of content to talk about. The type of music to be played on our audio media product is J-pop (Japanese pop) and generally upbeat music to keep the audience upbeat and 'happy'.

D) Running Order
The audio media product will run on average for around 30 minutes (Half an hour).

The order of our audio media product will be as followed;
       We will firstly introduce the show to the audience by saying "Welcome to Anime Half-Hour" and "We're your hosts", we will then play a 30 second advertisement, after the advertisement has finished we will play the jingle that we produced for our audio media product. We will then talk about the show we have watched during the week which will last around 10 minutes. We will then take a short break and play some music to keep the audience engaged, this will be for about 3-5 minutes. After the break has ended we will then continue to play a quick 30 second advertisement, and after the advertisement has finished we will then talk about shows that we recommend the audience should watch and which we suggest that they don't, this will again last around 10 minutes. And lastly we would say farewell to the audience by saying "Thanks for watching" and "Make sure to tune in next week" and we will then fade out with some music.

E) Anime Half-Hour Script

Joe: So Stephen, what shows have you seen during the week?
Stephen: (Talk about shows watched that week) (Well I recently watched the 472nd episode of One Piece)
Joseph: Can I just interrupt you there and ask how long it took you to watch 472 EPISODES, bearing in mind this will determine whether or not you have a life Stephen.
Stephen: Ha-ha how nice of you, but no it’s took me a while as I’ve been watching it on and off for about 2 years or so.
Joe: Oh okay, well I’ve also been watching One Piece but I'm nowhere near your count as I’ve only just managed to hit episode 37 however I would still have to give credit where its due to say that One Piece has managed to survive as long as it has is amazing, I mean it has 693 episodes and it scheduled for another 10 years of production.
Stephen: Yeah I know and I plan to watch every single one.
Joseph: Well that's your choice, but I don't think I would be able to do that.

(Talk about shows watched during that week)

(Discussion of the shows watched)

Stephen: Right, we're going to take a quick break for a few minutes, here is some music to keep you listening.
Joe: All right, now it's time for our second advertisement.

Stephen: Welcome back the second half of our show.
Joe: In this section of the show both Stephen and me will be giving you our personal recommendations on which anime and cartoons to watch and which not to watch and why. So shall we start Stephen?
Stephen: Lets, my personal favourite would have to be (One Piece) but I haven't been watching it too much lately, to be completely honest and don't judge me I’ve been getting really in to SpongeBob.
Joseph: Well, um are you sure you want to be admitting that.
Stephen: Oi what did I just say, DON'T JUDGE ME.?
Joseph: Sorry. But no on a more serious note SpongeBob is great no matter how old you are I mean both my mother and my niece and nephews watch it I mean that age gap alone is something to be proud off, not that I'm calling my mum old at all, because well, she would have my neck.
Stephen: Exactly, I mean like you said it can appeal to a large age group but not only that, it's also entertaining as well as it's just so simple but enjoyable at the same time to watch.

(Probably need some more here)

Joseph: Right unfortunately that's it for us today guys, so we're going to play you one last advertisement and head off, we hope that you tune in next week for the next episode of Anime Half-Hour.
Stephen: See you next week.

F) Production Schedule

Contingencies;
If presenters are unavailable;
If the presenters are unavailable to be on the show, guest presenter(s) will act as substitutes, the quest presenter(s) will be chosen in advance.

If guest stars are unavailable;
If the guest star(s) are unable to appear on the show, either a substitute guest will appear in the guests place or the presenters will have to deal with out the guest(s) in which case the presenter would go to their back up plan of the radio show/podcast.

If the equipment is unavailable;
If the required equipment is unavailable, we would have to improvise and remove the sections that required the use of that equipment, for example if the desired PC (computer) wasn’t working we would use a different PC (computer).

If the preferred time slot that we wanted to record in is unavailable;
If the preferred time slot that we wanted to record in is unavailable we would have to reschedule the time in which we planned to record in and our back up plan to solve this would be to firstly check if there is a slot of time within one hour of the original time slot and if not we would work our way out from there.

Equipment
If the cost of the equipment is an issues;
If the cost of the equipment is too high, it could affect the production of the show so we would have to take pre-cautions such as making sure we could if need be borrow some from other local stations or people.

If the equipment is faulty;
If the equipment is faulty it could disrupt the production of our audio media product so we would have to take pre-cautions such as additional back-up equipment and make back-ups/copies of all the files.

G) Legal and Ethical

Copyright:
In order to prevent copyright infringements, we will purchase a PRS license. This will allow us to use the intellectual properties of artists and bands that are signed to a label. However, if the artist is not signed to a label, we would have to gain permission to use their work on our show. The PRS licence costs £300 and would have to be renewed every year. We need a PRS licence as the music we would like to play on the show is music from artists that are currently signed to a label.

Legal and ethical issues:
As our product is based on anime and cartoons, we must be careful to not feature sound clips etc from the shows, as this is owned by the creators of the show and we could be sued for using it without permission. We also need to make sure that any profane language and discriminatory representations such as sexuality, drugs and gender must be edited out as our show will be released before the watershed (9pm) and also could cause unrest and offend people listening.

H) Proposed Scheduling Time

Time of day:
The time of day the podcast will be uploaded between would be: 12pm - 1pm.

Day(s) of the week:
The day(s) of the week in which this audio media product would be uploaded would be on a Monday

LO1 Task 2 'Analysis of Talk and Music Radio Show'

The objective for this task is to analyse a radio show on Sheffield Live, and the radio show I will be analysing in this task is a program known as Spirit of the Wapentake.

A) The purpose of a running order is to let the engineer know when to play/use certain sounds or segments in the radio show as this lets the engineer conduct the broadcast in the correct way so essentially it’s a schedule. For example it lets the engineer know when to play the music, jingle, sound effects (SFX), or even when the presenter(s) comes in or out and in what order they do. The running order is both for the audience and the advertisers/advertisements, as the running order would bring familiarity to the audience, which would create a loyal audience as the audience would be used to the type of order at which the radio show is presented and will therefore be comfortable with listening to Sheffield Lives programs. And as for the advertisements the running order would benefit them by giving them ample space between each other so the audience doesn't get frustrated at the amount of advertisements which often causes you to stop listening to the advertisement, and by giving them space between each advert the listener will stick around and hear the full advert.

The running order of Spirit of the Wapentake is typically the advertisements first, then their jingle (introduction) for their radio show, after which they begin to play songs/tracks, while having a several little breaks in between the songs where they just have a little chat (‘banter/conversation’) with each other and/ or its audience i.e. phone calls/social media/texts from the audience and fans to keep you engaged and interested in the program, they would then typically play some more songs and then take another advertisement break later on and it would typically progress as such throughout the remainder of the episode and the radio show itself.

B) The style in which the radio show ‘Spirit of the Wapentake' is presented is in a very informal and relaxed manner as it consists of the two hosts discussing the show/rock music that is to be played or the two hosts Graham Marshall & Sinead Rankin joking around and having a laugh, the show is presented like this as the audience can then relate to the two presenters and connect to them as people which allows a kind of relation between the presenters and its audience to develop which creates a loyal audience. Another way the radio show appeals to the audience is by how they address the audience, as they talk to the audience as if they are friends and that the audience is with them as they speak (we, us, words which involve the audience) this is used to grab the audience attention and keep it.

C) The radio show uses a lot of slang and ‘banter’ typically associated or relevant with/to the genre of rock, as well as because it’s a rock based radio show it only has rock music on the show. This show is primarily just rock music however it does include media interaction with its audience as well as debates and arguments as stated before ‘banter’ between the presenters.

D) The target audience of this radio show ‘Spirit of the Wapentake’ is between the ages of 14-45 as they play both old and new age rock depending on what day it is so the different episodes (genres of rock) will appeal to different age groups, this would also apply to the gender in which they aim at as the gender may vary depending on the episode playing i.e. whether its old or new age rock however the stereotypical gender will still be male. The spending power that this radio show is most likely to aim at is ABC1 as they would have the money to indulge themselves in comforts such as concerts and music. The lifestyle would again vary as you could have been brought up listening to new or old age rock you’re your parents to your friends therefore influencing your taste in music, you could have even been brought up in an area known for its rock heritage and again been influenced by it.

LO1 Task 1 'Investigating Radio Station(s)'

A)

Programme Types -

Sheffield Live ethos is to bring something new to the community by putting something back into society, the station does this by introducing them to something different/new. Sheffield Live is owned by Community Media Association, the station produces a variety of different programmes such as Dubstep Central, Latino times, X-Rated, Drop the Funk, Drop the Base, to Africa Beat with the genre of each varying as it would allow them to target a range of audiences.

B)

Genres -

Sheffield Live broadcast a variety of different genres such as reggae, news, talk shows, educational programmes i.e. documentaries and world news, pop-music, dub step, classic rock and punk rock etc. It also covers several nationalities using their programmes with Latino times which is a programme about Spanish music to latest issues with Latin Americans. Three reasons why Sheffield Live have so many genres is so they have a larger audience and by having such a variety of programmes and genres it allows them to hit a larger group of audiences therefore achieving their ethos which is to put something back into the community/society.

C)

Audiences Profile(s) -

Sheffield Lives’ main target audience is people that live in or around the area of Sheffield however this means they target a range of audiences using their products.

Here is an example of one of their target audiences in the format of a mood board.

D)
Production Process -
The different parts of the company work together to produce and promote products by using methods known as horizontal and vertical integration. For example the company called Community Media Association could use Sheffield Live to produce a product and promote a product and vice versa i.e. Sheffield Live could use the conglomerate Community Media Association to promote/and help produce a product using the resources they have. The different parts of the production team work together to produce products in several ways one of which is by having a production plan i.e. the pre-production, production and post-production teams work together to get a deadline for all of the stages of the production i.e. when the scripting, advertisement/marketing and financing of the product is to be finished i.e. they work together to get a schedule for the production of the product, The production teams also work together to make the scripting/promotional products and advertising content is up to scratch and not considered offensive. They also work together by making sure the producer gets what s/he wanted i.e. the pre-production stage would state what type of sound, music and jingle(s) the producer wants and the production stage would create or find that sound, piece of music or jingle(s) that is needed. They would also do this for the advertisement that would be used, the pre-production team would state what is needed/wanted and the production team would create it and the post-production team would distribute it.

E)
Market Share -
The main competitors of Sheffield Live are BBC Radio Sheffield and Hallam FM. They are considered competitors as they all share and operate in the same industry and have the same genres / type of product and have the possibility to 'steal' Sheffield Live audience. The organisation, Sheffield Live stands out from the competitors by ensuring that they have a variety of products to offer to their audiences. The official share of radio audience of Sheffield Live is 11% which is a small number in its self however as it 11% of 275,000 people which is 32,000 people its a good amount of radio share as its non-profit radio station.
